Pain after PF surgery
Hi I am new here, but I have been suffering with Pf on and off for at least 12 years but within the last two years it really flared and I went through Cortisone shots, anti-inflammatories, steroids, orthodicts and finally surgery. I had surgery on my left foot in Feb 2010; 8 months in to recovering my right foot flared and the doc did surgery on that foot in Oct 2010. As of today my heels don't hurt, but the entire foot hurts on a scale of 1-10 I would say its a good 7. I have not been able to go back to work since I had the surger and I don't see any relief in sight. I am very frustrated by this, I thought after I had the surgery I would have my life back and would be able to go for the long walks I so enjoy, and shopping with my daughter. Just getting out of bed or walking across the room is pure torcher. My feet feel like I've walked Disneyland 3 times non-stop and then I get this charle horse feeling in the arch and the tops of the feet hurt, as well as my ankles I can't stand in one place I have to keep shifting my weight from one foot to the other and I can't be on my feet for more than maybe 2 or 3 hours all together and now I have to use a cane when I am out for any lengh of time. My dr says he dosen't know why my feet continue to hurt but says "it's nothing I've done" and says he has nothing more to offer me. My question is this has anyone out there ever had this problem after surgery? any help would be appreciated thanks

I had surgery on my right foot in Feb 08 and now both of my feet are bad. The surgery did not help only made it worse. I have been to two podiatrists and because the first surgery did not work there was no way they would do left foot and I would not let them had they tried. I have been off work since August because I can not stand or walk for even 2hrs with out being in lost of pain! I have not heard many good outcomes of the surgery and did not know that b4 having it myself. If I had known I probably would not have had it. I have tried everything that the doctor has suggested and nothing has worked. My second podiatrist is now sending me to a rhumatologist because he does not think there is anything he can do. Funny you should say that your dr is sending you to a rhumatologist, now my dr is saying that its something systemic like arthritis, fibromyalgia or some kind of neuralgia. But he also says that there is nothing he can do for me either. I will be on disability for a whole year in Jan, so I will now have to file for perment disability, which he tells me that I am not disabled and that I should try to go to work for a day or a week and then if I have to see my reg doc and have her take me off work again. I feel like he did the surgery and now feels that his job is done, but I am still in pain. I am 45 I have two kids at home and 2 grandkids and I can't keep up with them because of this this pain.

HELP..............
I wonder if you are still having pain...........I had my surgery on Jan. 13th, 2011. It is now April 22, 2011. I have gone through everything you have....And, I have the same feelings in my feet as you do...they are starting to ache all over and my baby toe is numb and throbs....When I just lay down on the bed to rest my foot it just continues to throb...no relief.....I am still taking pain meds..I don't think I see a light at the end of the tunnel AT ALL..I am so depressed.......Can't work and can only be on my feet all day if I take pain pills other than that I don't do much and gaining more weight cause I can't exercise..My last visit last week to my doctor tried branching out on the fibromyglia and I know that is NOT the problem....I have more pain now than I ever did before.....What are we going to do??? Unfortunatly I dont have any suggestions to make it feel better.
I have had two open fasciiatomies on my left foot. The first one was Jan 08 and the second was Dec 10. I have now had an issue with pain for 6 and a half years now. I would describe the pain similar to you Sally (the Disneyland walk). Only other way to describe is take a sore muscle after a long workout and put all that pain into one small area (arch) of the foot. My pain has always been in my arch, so I don't know how different its supposed to be from heel pain. I can walk on my foot (with limp after a while) even with the pain. I was told a couple different things prior to and post surgery. Prior to the surgery in 08 and 10, I was told it was a 75% success rate. After the surgery in 08 I was seen for a short 10 minute talk with a physical therapist that focused on sports meds. He told me surgery was more of a toss of a dime and good luck for I would likely never run again. I then went through a few other non-surgical treatments and talking with two doctors, decided on the second surgery. My pain has recently come back within the past month. Since then I have heard anything from it will be fine, just give it time to I will possibily live with the pain forever. Keeping in mind only one person had a healthcare profession on the pain forever scale. Others telling me I would have pain forever offered a miracle cure within a few weeks at a price (tired of miracle cures and I'm not spending the cash).
I know there are plenty of jobs as a 27 year old I can do on or off my feet. However being military, I am doing my best not to get kicked out for this. If anyone has any suggestions for myself or anyone on this post, please reply.

Liz, Welcome aboard.......I just had surgery 6 months ago however, just developed a new pain in the ligament of my surgery foot. I was told today by the orthothic doctor that it is probably scar tissue that has form. He described the surgery like this: He held up a piece of paper, he tugged on the top and the bottom of the paper lightly to show me there was no flexiblity (like your ligament or fasica). Then, he took the paper and a razor blade and cut "slits" up and down the sheet of paper. Now he said, pull on the top of the paper and the bottom you can see the flexibility. He said, he watched several of those surgeries NOW, what happens at each one of those places where he slits the "fascia" scar tissue can form and also around in the heel...This made me understand the procedure better and as Misty mentioned how important it is to stretch, stretch and flex those ligaments/fascia. Hope this made sense..........

What stretches is your doctor having you do? Similar ones to prior surgery (calf stretches using a wall, picking up a rolled up towel with your toes, etcc...) or are there post surgery stretches he recommended to get rid of the scar tissue? Did he give you an estimated time of recovery? Sorry for the question overload, but any suggestions would greatly help, especially if I can nip this in the bud and stay in.

Liz, to be honest with you my surgeon told me NO PHYSCIAL THERAPY was needed after surgery. You probably already have read my notes and I am not happy but, thank goodness for friends on here that are helping me out. One of the girls on this website told me to stretch..She had numbness like I did and told me she stretched all the time...Yes, the things you have mentioned...The towel, a frozen water bottle (roll your foot on it), pick up marbles with your toes etc.....Now, the orthothic doctor that made my inserts over the past couple years told me this morning if its scar tissue the nerves can't grow threw them.....if, thats the case then this is BAD FOR ME and my numbness.......However, my surgeon sent me to a neurologist because he wanted to say the numbness was from either,arthristis, fibromialgia or my "back" like spinal damage.......I HAD NONE OF THOSE EVER......And, to think now he wants to blame my pain and numbness on something else......I am 48, use to working professionally, a little over weight, high energy and this has just put a STOP in my daily life...I am trying to adjust to "oh, you'll get over it, it will take a year, give it time," I am trying to do these things really hard but its a different life style.... My neurologist also said, if a nerve is damaged it grows only one milimeter a day... So, are you pretty active?? I assume so since you are in the military and HATS OFF TO YOU !!!! :) Do you have a tennis ball???? Maybe roll your foot on it....My neurologist did have a pharmacy in Alabama make me some ointment to keep on that foot for pain and numbness 4 times a day....It does help a little but, not totally....Maybe your doctor could order you some of that if I give you the name of it........If, you are like me you are willing for anything.......Carmen

Definitly willing for anything at this point. Physically active with a stand-up bike and strength training... just about anything not involving my feet. I am wanting to get back into running. Thanks for the hats off. The tennis ball never used to do it for me. Someone suggested I try a rolling pin then, so I will try that one out. I should say hats off to you too for having to put such a stop in your daily routine but keeping up a good attitude (or at least faking it for me and helping me out in the process). Its good to talk to others that are going through the same issue instead of constant back and forth from various docs and others that think its just a phase.

Liz, LOL.......faking it ??? Well, I was trying to be a little nice on here.......Since talking to you last I put down just one little basket of mulch and my toes have turned "cold".........Now, what the heck is that.......?? It's 90 degrees here in Virginia and my foot is freezing........Wonder if that is arthritis?? I do have a foot massage machine on the floor....it has those little balls that goes around and around.....I was told to massage the surgical area with those as much as possible and to go swimming......"Swimming" would be really good if you could get near a pool and use those feet........However, I did that on Monday over did it - and - threw my back out............But, as one mentioned on here I should not of done so much at one time.....Just a little at a time. I plan on going back as soon as my "low back" pain is gone....G O O D G R I E F........what next ???

Well, well I see we're all still in the same boat lol, I am still having pain in both feet my heels feel like I'm walking on little bits of sand when I am bare foot, makes a popping sound and sounds like grinding. I've tried it all, streaches, heat, cold, tennis ball, frozen water ball, night splints, cam boot (4 differnt ones), picking up marbles with my toes, I really don't know what the answer is. I am still waiting to see my foot doc 6/28 still taking the anti-inflammatories which don't really help, but I am in more pain if I don't take em. I think before anyone has this surgery the doc should really make an effort for the patient to fully understand what the outcome could be, not just say "theres a chance you might not get relife", but tell them that its really trading one pain for another. I am seriously thinkging of filing for permenante disability now, I've seen an foot doc, rheumatologtist, orthopedist and my reg doc, they tell me they don't have any answers. And now they refer me back to the foot doc to start over. They all suggested I lose 10lbs and i would feel so much better well I've now lost 25lbs and I do feel better, but my feet still hurt 24/7 somedays I think "just cut them off at the ankles"

There's SALLY.........I wondered what happened to you..........I've called and asked for copies of my medical records twice. At first they said, they would get them together. When I didn't hear anything else they said, Oh the office manager can't talk to you but, she said it takes 2-4 weeks for you to get them....Okay, I have an appointment on the 21st of June. Why go back???? Oh I am so upset today..........Its like as long as everything is going their way then everyone was happy. But, once I complained about my foot everything broke loose...........And, I am not going to stop fighting....There is NO ARTHRITIS, FIBROMALIGA AND NO REGULAR BACK PROBLEMS.....So, why is my foot numb and in pain........Because the doctor messed up and didn't give me all the info. I needed to begin with...Had I known all this I WOULD NOT OF DONE IT.....I was there on Tuesday in tears and he said, lets do surgery on Thursday it only takes 10 minutes and you'll be better in 6 weeks and we will do the other foot.........He will never touch my other foot !!!!!!!! Oh, Sally...I do have some cream the neurologist ordered for me from Alabama...It helps "some".......
